News - January-March 2008
Dear Member,
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a Happy New
Year, Hope you are ready to get back out on the water to do some paddling. The
main news for the club and centre this year is that after a few years of
paperwork and meetings we finally managed to get the planning consent to build
our training lake in Llandysul, so many thanks to the people who have helped
secure this for us including Irena Paxton, Marion Bryant and CCC planning office.. The next stage is to find some funding partners hopefully
before the summer.
Christmas Party: Many thanks to all of you who could make
it to the Christmas party it was a great evening with some awards being
presented so congratulations to: Luke Cooper (Most improved male paddler),
Roisin Lee Edwards (Most improved female paddler), Ciaran Lee Edwards
(the John Rowland’s special achievement award), Robin (wipe out of the
year) Steffan Walker (Slalom Paddler of the year), Cathy Thurgate
(freestyle paddler of the year) Ieuan Stark (coach of the year).

"Ren’s Henllan Falls head to head Classic" Again this was
a great event with large water levels, the winners were Gareth Bryant (Men’s),
Gemma Sims (Ladies), David Warren (Jnr Men’s), Cathy Thurgate (Jnr Ladies).
Committee Meeting: The Next Committee meeting is on
January 22nd at 7pm in the canoe centre.
Membership: Membership runs from January to January so it
is now due please pick up a form from the centre or shop or use the ones sent

Pool Lessons: Canoeing lessons in Llandysul pool are held
every Monday from 4pm until 5pm (Juniors Only) and also from 7pm until 8pm for

There is also a pool session in Aberaeron pool every Wednesday for costs and
times please contact the pool on 01545570871.

DATES FOR JANUARY, FEBRUARY AND MARCH
SLALOM DEVELOPMENT TRAINING
These sessions are aimed at those who are interested in
developing their slalom skills. Our club sessions run on Tuesday evenings at 5pm
until 6pm and Thursday evenings from 6pm until 7pm. For further details please

WHITE WATER TRAINING DAYS
These sessions are for the intermediate or advanced paddlers and
will be run on the Tryweryn in North Wales or other similar grade 3 and 4 rivers
you can use slalom or plastic boats.
Sunday 3rd February training day in Bala
with Gema and Nick 8am depart cost £5.
Monday 11th February training day in
Bala with Gema 8am depart cost £5.
Sunday 23rd March training day in Bala
with Gema 8am depart cost £5.
Intro to white water weekend in Llandysul
March 1st and 2nd £50 course half price
to club members for more info please have a look at

Also every Saturday in February, March, April, will be a 10am
club day. This day will cost £5 each a decision will be made in the morning as
to which river we will paddle.
FAMILY PADDLING OR FLAT WATER TASTER DAYS
These sessions are for those who wish to develop kayaking skills
on flat water or small rapids these days are open to all members.
12th and 13th February Taster paddling
days open to all abilities 10am until 4pm £10 per person.
Every Saturday in February, March,
April, will be a 10am club day. This day will cost £5 each a decision will be
made in the morning as to which river we will paddle.
OUTDOOR MULTI ACTIVITY DAYS
These days are a chance to try new activities in the outdoors.
Thursday 14th February Indoor Rock
climbing day 9am until 4pm £10 per person.
EVENTS
Saturday and Sunday February 23rd & 24th
2008: Ladies Only Teifi Tour
On this weekend there will be a chance for female paddlers to
have the river to themselves the event has bean organised by the WCA community
development coach Gemma Sims. The event costs £10 for both days or £6 per day,
paddlers should aim to be at the centre in Llandysul by 10am on Saturday or
Sunday morning the section of water to be paddled will be decided on the day
after looking at water levels. Male paddlers will be available to drive the
shuttle buses and provide safety on some of the rapids (Any volunteers?)
Accommodation is available in the centre if you book in advance or camping is
opposite the centre. Demo Boats and equipment are available to borrow on the
day.
COURSES
Llandysul paddlers canoe centre runs a large amount of B.C.U
coach and paddler development courses, the head of coaching at the centre is
Gareth Bryant so please contact Gareth if you would like additional information
on any courses, the centre number is 01559363209. Further information is

will be eligible for discounts on courses; unfortunately we cannot offer
everyone a discount on courses. To be eligible for discounts on the star test,
intro to White Water or Sea courses you must be a member of Llandysul Paddlers
Canoe Club (50% discount) to be eligible for a discount on the coach development
course level 1-5 or WWSR courses you must be an active local coach who assists
on club nights and other development days.

W.C.A COMMUNITY COACHES
West Wales has 2 Community coaches who are based at the centre
in Llandysul they are Gemma Sims whose role is to develop women and girls
paddling in the area and Mike Maybury
Mike’s remit is to mentor coaches in West Wales and support
local clubs.
Both Gemma and Mike will be at hand to assist on most of the
training days if you would like to contact Gemma about any of the training
